RAID 1 also known as mirroring, is a RAID configuration where the data stored on one disk is mirrored exactly onto another disk. RAID 1 mirrored configuration can be created using multiple RAID disks.
RAID 1 configuration provides high level of redundancy, as the data stored on one disk is duplicated exactly onto another disk. If the primary disk fails then access to data can continue from the mirrored disk.
Multiple disk RAID 1 array is setup to store data across multiple disks and mirror this onto another set of multiple disks. Although this gives very high level of protection against data loss, this type of configuration is still very inefficient use of disk space, where half the available storage is used for mirroring.
